MARATHON COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION
We have all been nourished by… …food we did not grow, …books written and purchased by strangers, …art and music created by minds we never knew.
The Marathon School District history holds many stories of thoughtful community members who have left behind significant bequests to honor our graduates with scholarships and awards. With that generosity in mind, the Marathon Community Scholarship Foundation has been established as a tax-exempt charitable organization with a mission of enhancing future educational possibilities for Marathon students. While the existing graduation award list is quite extensive, the value of the principal supporting many of these awards has eroded over time. Low interest rates have further reduced the funds available for the actual Commencement awards.
We wish to emphasize that all current Commencement awards will continue to be given using the criteria of the original contributor(s) and drawing on the interest generated by the original monetary donation. The goal of our newly constituted Board of Trustees is to build a significant endowment to support, and eventually expand, the current graduation award program and to establish among departing graduates a sense of appreciation for the education that has been provided for them by the Marathon community.
We hope that you are able to consider your years here at Marathon a positive force in your life, and that as circumstances allow, you may choose to express gratitude to future generations of students at your alma mater in a material way. Perhaps you would consider making donations in honor or in memory of friends or loved ones, or in the name of someone who is celebrating a significant life milestone. Information for contributions is available through the Marathon Community Scholarship Foundation, PO Box #1, Marathon, NY 13803.
The Board of Trustees will meet the third Monday of the month, on at least a quarterly basis. We welcome input as we begin this venture. We will provide updates regularly in the Torchlight, along with an annual financial report mailed to all contributors.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Board of Trustees
